Barcelona to make last ditch plea to Thiago

Barcelona are set to hold last-minute talks with Thiago Alcantara, in an attempt to persuade the midfielder to turn down a move to Manchester United, according to the Mail Online.

The Premier League champions have reportedly agreed personal terms with the 22 year old, who recently captained Spain to victory in the European under 21 Championships in Israel.

It is understood that the player and his father are confident of finalising the £17m move, though his current club are keen to retain his services.

Meanwhile, the Metro understands that the club are closing in on a deal for Benfica defender Ezequiel Garay.

Reports in Portugal are claiming that the 26 year old has been house-hunting in the North West as he nears a
£17m switch to Old Trafford.

The Argentina international was a key member of the Benfica side that reached last season’s Europa League final, making 41 appearances for the club.

Elsewhere, Manchester United have confirmed that first team coach Rene Meulensteen has left the club.

The Dutchman, who had been at Old Trafford for the majority of the last twelve years, is reported to be joining Guus Hiddink at Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala having been linked with the recent vacant managers post at Wigan Athletic.
