Rooney in line for bumper new deal

Wayne Rooney is set to earn a staggering £52m as part of a new four year contract set to be offered to him by Manchester United, the Metro understands.

The striker, who is line to win his eighty-seventh international cap at Wembley this evening as Roy Hodgson’s side take on Chile in a friendly, was strongly linked with a move to Chelsea in the summer.

However, he put any reported off field problems behind him to begin this campaign in fine form, with five goals in ten league games.

Rooney’s current deal is set to expire at the end of next summer.

Meanwhile, United are set to join Chelsea and Liverpool in the race to sign Real Madrid’s Xabi Alonso, according to the Daily Star.

The Spain international’s contract at the Bernebau runs until the end of the season, and with manager Carlo Ancelotti bringing in a whole host of midfielders during the summer, the 31 year old is likely to be playing his football elsewhere next year.

Elsewhere, Ben Amos has joined League One Carlisle United on a month long loan deal, BBC Sport understands.

The 23 year old, who began his career at United, has also enjoyed loan spells with Peterborough United, Molde, Oldham Athletic and Hull City.
