Cleverley set for new deal?

Few people would argue that Tom Cleverley has become a key part in the Manchester United team this term and according to newspaper reports, he is set to be rewarded handsomely for his efforts. Speculation is mounting that the England international is set to receive a new contract that will double his money in a bid to fend off any potential suitors.

Cleverley has made a sterling impression in Sir Alex Ferguson’s team this year and the fact that he has already made nine appearances for club and country speaks volumes about the progress he is making. Moreover, even though there was plenty of emphasis on the fact that Cleverley had not scored for United, he recently put an end to that blot and now has two goals in his last three games.

Following on from the above, the newspapers are indicating that United chiefs are desperate to sit down with the 23-year-old and start negotiations on a new contract. This will undoubtedly be news that surprises a lot of people, as it was only last year when the player signed a new deal worth a supposed £40,000 per year. However, with Cleverley’s career now progressing at such a rapid rate, the media understand that the Red Devils are looking to double that figure in this next deal to keep him tied in at Old Trafford.

Of course, the whole story might have simply been created to fill a slow news day. However, the fact that Cleverley has two and half years on his contract will be a slight concern, especially as negotiations seem to take forever to thrash out these days. This means it could certainly be plausible for United to want to get his future sorted now, rather than wait until the end of the season when the situation could become more precarious.
