Patrice Evra has never been one of the quiet United players and the full back has once again opened up on his views on the events at Old Trafford over recent months. The Frenchman believes that due to the signing of Robin Van Persie, too many people forgot about Wayne Rooney and it made him feel as though the club “had only one striker”.
Ever since Van Persie’s arrival there has been intense attention focussed on the Dutchman, and this was magnified even more following the impressive start to his Old Trafford career. In fact, RVP’s impression was so substantial that several newspapers started to run stories that suggested that United were more than happy to listen to offers for Rooney.
Following on from this, Evra claims that some people started to forget about the importance of Rooney far too quickly. Speaking to the media the defender said, “People criticise really easily. When Robin arrived he scored four goals in his first two starts and was unbelievable. But the way people were talking I thought we had only one striker. But you shouldn’t forget Wayne and all he has done for this club. We’ve got a lot of strikers. Robin is an amazing player and it is always good to have someone with his quality. I’m happy they are playing well and I’m sure we can play both Wayne and Robin.”
Fortunately, Rooney at least seems to be returning to the form that has made him such a threat over all these years. Moreover, he is proving that he can play with Van Persie in the same team, with the duo combining exceptionally well in the Champions League outing against CFR Cluj-Napoca. While RVP scored both of the goals, Rooney played a huge part and it’s hoped they can take such performances into the Premier League.
