Sir Alex Ferguson could bring an end to his glittering Manchester United career before the week is through, according to rumours circulating in the press on Tuesday evening.
The Guardian have reported that members of the playing and coaching staff were told during a golf day at Dunham Massey to expect an announcement regarding their manager.
The 71 year old, who led the club to a twentieth league championship this season; the thirteenth of his twenty-seven year tenure, has given no real suggestion that he is set to retire though bookmakers yesterday slashed the odds of David Moyes becoming United’s next manager ahead of these reports.
Jose Mourinho has also long been in the frame should a vacancy appear, with the 50 year old expected to part company with Real Madrid at the end of the season.
Ferguson, who had a pacemaker fitted several years ago has always maintained that his health would be what stops him eventually, and the club have confirmed that he is to undergo hip surgery ahead of the clubs preseason tour of Thailand, Australia, Japan and Hong Kong.
The club have declined to comment on the rumours, refusing to even return calls regarding the subject.
