Manchester United Legend Defends José Mourinho’s Approach against Liverpool

Manchester United icon Ryan Giggs says that the club should get used to do Jose Mourinho adopting a defensive approach in some of the key games.

Manchester United have been criticised for changing their style of play and going all out defensive in the recent match at Anfield. Many saw this as a sign of Mourinho giving too much respect to Liverpool and their recent form. United have a tradition of playing attractive football and very rarely have they performed so poorly in the last three decades. However, Giggs says that Mourinho’s judgements should be trusted since it may be one of the ways to win trophies.

Even the great Sir Alex Ferguson used defensive tactics from time to time if he thought that it was the best possible way for United to win trophies. Ferguson, however, provided beautiful and attractive football to the club on most occasions and the defensive minded games were largely forgotten. Mourinho is struggling to match the same since he has a reputation for being a defensive coach on almost all occasions. Giggs tried to look on the positive side by claiming that a defeat would have caused a lot of pressure on the team going into the next few weeks.

As of now, they can forget the goalless draw at Anfield and look forward to the Europa League game against Fenerbahce.”It’s something we accept at the minute. It’s the climate we’re in. You see the games coming up – if you lose tonight the pressure is on. Going up against Liverpool – everyone expected Liverpool to blow United away. It’s a good draw but you have to beat Fenerbahce on Thursday then the momentum builds and you go into Chelsea and Manchester City full of confidence. It’s baby steps. It’s about getting to the top but it all comes down to results,” said Giggs.
