McTominay aiming to cement his starting spot at Manchester United

Scotland international Scott McTominay is determined to cement the starting role with Manchester United. The youngster has been in-and-out of the first XI for the Red Devils over the past two seasons but he has been afforded with the chance to solidify the starting berth alongside Paul Pogba this campaign.

Speaking to MUTV, McTominay said that he is keen to impress the manager such that he can command the midfield role on the weekly basis, he quipped: “Yeah, of course. You have to look game by game and look to try and keep impressing the coaches and training is a big part of it. I feel like the game is the end result of a big training week and obviously we don’t get too many long training weeks like we’ve had the last couple of weeks and obviously it’s important to show the coaches you are capable of being in midfield every week and if you’re not you have to show them that you are capable of it. That’s the way that a lot of the lads in the changing room look at it.”

Nemanja Matic has been the regular partner for Pogba over the past couple of seasons but his performances have genuinely dropped over the past year where he has been found out for the reduced mobility and slow decision-making. That has permitted McTominay to jump ahead of him in the pecking order and he now requires a consistent run of form to stabilise the position.

United have parted ways with both Marouane Fellaini and Ander Herrera over the past eight months, but there have not been any replacements pursued. United boss Solskjaer has spoken about the ambition of nurturing young talents at the club and hopefully McTominay can be one of those, who can serve the club for the long-term. McTominay is expected to feature for the Red Devils when they tackle Wolverhampton Wanderers on the road on Monday night.
