United ease into Champions League knockout stages

Manchester United secured their place in the knockout stages of this season’s Champions League in style by thrashing Bayer Leverkusen 5-0 at the BayArena yesterday evening.

Antonio Valencia put the Premier League champions in front on twenty-two minutes, turning in Wayne Rooney’s cross before Emir Spahic turned in to own net to double the visitors advantage on the half hour mark.

Rooney was approached by Scotland

Former Scotland manager Berti Vogts has said that he tried to persuade Wayne Rooney to play for the Tartan Army during his time in charge, Sky Sports understands.

Vogts, who was at the helm from 2002 to 2004, claims that he was made aware of Rooney’s Scottish connections when the striker was a 16 year old coming through at Everton.
