Modric on United’s radar?

Having recently concluded the transfer of Dortmund midfielder Shinji Kagawa, it looks as though Sir Alex Ferguson is looking a little closer to home for his next buy with Tottenham midfielder Luka Modric supposedly on his radar. It is no secret that United struggled for creativity last term and Modric is the man that SAF has apparently earmarked to solve the club’s attacking problems.

It was only twelve months ago that there was a long transfer saga involving Modric, with Chelsea attempting every move in the book to lure the Croatian playmaker to Stamford Bridge. Having had multiple deals rejected, Modric then took it upon himself to ask to leave the club although his request was firmly rebuffed. However, following Spurs’ failure to qualify for the Champions League, it is understood that Modric is even more keen to leave White Hart Lane, while the financial benefits of the sale of their star asset may also prove too difficult to turn down by the Tottenham board.

Already, Modric has cast doubt on his career as a Tottenham player, stating just one month ago that his future is still undecided, “I will decide about my future after the Euros. I will make the decision where to continue my career. I’m ready for the big tests.”

As well as Modric, Ferguson is still mulling over the possibility of signing Everton full back Leighton Baines. Both players are set to be involved in the upcoming Euro 2012 campaign, so any move is likely to be delayed for at least one month until the competition concludes. With both players being important men for their respective clubs, United will have to part with significant amounts of money to land the duo, although he is adamant that this is the only viable approach that will allow the club to compete with their big spending rivals.
