United back to winning ways against Swansea

Manchester United ended a run of three straight defeats on Saturday afternoon with a 2-0 win over a struggling Swansea City side, who knocked them out of the FA Cup just six days previously.

Second half goals from Antonio Valencia and Danny Welbeck secured the victory for David Moyes’ men, though they are no closer to the sides above them following wins for all five of those who played over the weekend.

Arsenal are yet to play, but should they beat Aston Villa this evening, they will return to the top of the table and regain an eleven point advantage over the champions.

United will now turn their attention to next Sunday’s trip to Stamford Bridge, where victory would move them to within six points of Jose Mourinho’s men, who currently sit in second place.

Meanwhile, the club have again been linked with a move for Juan Mata, according to the Daily Star.

Chelsea are reluctant to sell the Spain international to one of their Premier League rivals, but could be tempted to use him as a makeweight in a deal for Wayne Rooney, who himself remains a target of Jose Mourinho.

The England striker, who missed Saturday’s victory through injury, is yet to sign a new contract at Old Trafford.
