United look to edge closer to title with win over West Ham

Manchester United have the chance to all but wrap up the Premier League title when they face West Ham United at Upton Park this evening.

If the league leaders win, and second place Manchester City lose to Wigan Athletic, they will be eighteen points clear with the current Champions having just eighteen left to play for.

As United have a goal difference advantage of plus ten over their local rivals, the league title would be as good theirs, though a point at home to Aston Villa on Monday will make it certain.

United are unbeaten in three meetings with the Hammers this season, having won the reverse fixture at Old Trafford 1-0 back in November before achieving the same score-line in the FA Cup third round replay having drawn the original tie 2-2.

Sir Alex Ferguson could recall Jonny Evans or Chris Smalling in place of Rio Ferdinand or Nemanja Vidic, while Wayne Rooney could move upfront, with Tom Cleverley possibly coming into midfield.

Meanwhile, the Manchester United manager has backed striker Robin Van Persie go go on a goal scoring run after ending his ten match drought from the spot in the 2-0 win over Stoke City last time out.

Ferguson told MUTV that he hopes the Dutch striker can “kick on” after taking his league tally to twenty, just two behind Liverpool’s Luis Suarez.
