United will consider Shaw bid if they fail to bring in Baines

Manchester United will turn their attention to Southampton’s Luke Shaw if they fail in their attempts to sign Leighton Baines, the Express understands.

The 18 year old made his twenty-fifth senior start for the Saints in their 1-0 opening day victory over West Bromwich Albion at the weekend, and has been labelled as one of English football’s hottest prospects.

During the summer, Shaw signed a new five year deal with the club, who have no intention or need to sell.

However, the club are expected to make an improved joint offer to Everton for Baines and Marouane Fellaini, according to Sky Sports.

The Premier League champions saw a bid of £28m rejected by the Toffee’s earlier this week, so will return with an offer in the region of £35m.

Elsewhere, one player who has been allowed to leave Old Trafford is 21 year old Scott Wootton, who has signed for Leeds United, the Mail Online understands.

The defender, who is comfortable playing anywhere across the back line, made just four appearances for United in three years with the club, though he has spent much of that time out on loan.

He becomes the first player to secure a permanent move from United to Leeds since Danny Pugh was used as a makeweight in a deal that saw Alan Smith move in the opposite direction in 2004.
